What are antioxidants?
Antioxidants are compounds whose primary function is to protect our body from oxidative damage caused by molecules known as free radicals, among others. Such oxidative damage is responsible for a major degenerative diseases of the circulatory system, cardiovascular disease, cataracts, aging and cancer, all of which today are the leading cause of death in our society.
Free radicals disrupt the smooth functioning of the cells of our body, attacking structural components of the same keys, such as lipids and proteins in the cell membrane, enzymes and even DNA, responsible for operating and cellular renewal.
Where are antioxidants?
Of course our agency has a system of antioxidant defenses represented mainly by certain enzymes. However, given the level of free radicals that form our body, it is essential to the intake of antioxidants in our diet. ¿Qué son los Antioxidantes?
Los antioxidantes son compuestos cuya función primordial en nuestro organismo es protegernos del daño oxidativo que causan moléculas conocidas como radicales libres, entre otras. Dicho daño oxidativo es el responsable de importantes enfermedades de carácter degenerativo del sistema circulatorio, enfermedades cardiovasculares, cataratas, envejecimiento precoz y cáncer, todas las cuales hoy son la principal causal de muerte en nuestra sociedad.
Los radicales libres alteran el buen funcionamiento de las células de nuestro organismo, atacando a componentes estructurales claves de las mismas, tales como lípidos y proteínas de la membrana celular, enzimas e incluso al ADN, responsable del funcionamiento y renovación celular.
¿Dónde se encuentran los antioxidantes?
Naturalmente nuestro organismo cuenta con un sistema de defensas antioxidantes representado fundamentalmente por ciertas enzimas. No obstante y dado el nivel de radicales libres que forma nuestro cuerpo, resulta indispensable la ingesta de antioxidantes en nuestra dieta. Cinco al día (Five a day)
La campaña cinco al día que ha comenzado el Ministerio de Salud Pública en Chile y que es similar a la que existe en Estados Unidos y el Reino Unido conocida como “Five a day” busca dar a conocer a la población la importancia de la ingesta diaria de cinco frutas de color diferente. ¿Y por qué el color debe ser diferente? Porque muchos de los compuestos que tienen función antioxidante son los responsables de aportar el color a los vegetales y por lo tanto colores diferentes aportarán compuestos antioxidantes complementarios en nuestra dieta.
¿Es posible obtener los compuestos antioxidantes de los vegetales preservando todas sus propiedades?
Sabemos que hay ciertos compuestos antioxidantes tales como la vitamina C que están en las frutas como naranjas y limones o como la vitamina E presente en hortalizas de hoja, que es posible adquirirlos en el mercado y que permiten su ingesta como fuentes antioxidantes. Dichas vitaminas normalmente no son extraídas de sus fuentes naturales, sino que son sintetizadas en forma artificial.
